First Open Water Swim

Photo

Today was my first open water swim with Team In Training--up until now all of our swim practices have been in pools. AND it was also my first open water swim, ever. I suppose I've been lounging, splashing, surfing, SCUBAing, snorkeling and bodyboarding around in the ocean since before I can remember but this is the first time I've ever hopped in with the express intent of *exercise*.

And it's certainly the first time I've ever been in the water in the San Francisco Bay.

I have to say the experience was significantly less awful than I had dared dream. In fact, you might even say, I enjoyed it!

Raising Money to Fight Blood Cancers

I'm sort of, almost, half way to my goal of $3300 for blood cancer research with Team In Training and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Ok, I'm 44% of the way there. But that's still a damn good chunk o' change!

My Team In Training Fundraising and mini-blog page has more information: http://pages.teamintraining.org/sf/bigktri11/ckwilcox

No matter how much money I do or do not raise, I'll be in the water and on the roads in Santa Cruz for the "Big Kahuna" Half Iron Man on September 11th, 2011.

Something's funny about the Blue Bird... Oh well, I'm not the one wearing it.

A Trouble with Paradise

One problem with living in the tropics which people often forget about
while they ponder the gorgeous white sandy beaches and warm water:
bugs.

The little bastards never freeze to death/hibernate/whatever; so you
end up with a house full of little monsters.

This chap was probably the dumbest cockroach I've ever seen. Fell on
his back when I turned the lights on and never could manage to flip
himself right side up. Survive nuclear winter? I think not.

Also, he's seriously like the size of my hand.
